3 Ways to Celebrate Veterans Day in the Rio Grande Valley

2016 Veterans Day Events in the Rio Grande Valley

The U.S. military and Texas go hand-in-hand as perfectly as chocolate and peanut butter. We are certain that it is because of the Alamo, the multitude of military bases throughout the state, the strong sense of patriotism, and the many veterans that call Texas home. Speaking of veterans, it is time to honour them by observing Veterans Day on November 11. There are several events taking place in the Rio Grande Valley to commemorate our heroes, and we are excited to share a few of our favorites!

Marine Military Academy Veterans Day Parade

Harlingen’s MMA will be hosting a battalion-sized parade on November 11. The parade will start in front of the Iwo Jima Monument at 4:00pm (or maybe we should say 1600 hours). After the parade, take some time to admire the plaster statue that served as the cast for the bronze U.S. Marine Corps Memorial in Washington DC. The statue is based on the famous photo taken by Joe Rosenthal and features the one Navy Corpsman and five Marines (including Weslaco native Harlon Block) who raised the second flag on Mount Suribachi. You can also visit Harlon Block’s grave nearby.

South Padre Island Veterans Day 2016 Celebration

For the sixth year in a row, South Padre Island is hosting a celebration to honour veterans. The celebration will take place from 2:00pm to 5:00pm on November 11 at the Hilton Garden Inn at Andy Bowie Park (7010 Padre Boulevard). South Padre Island mayor Barry Patel will be leading the celebration to commemorate all veterans and the fifth anniversary of the Purple Heart Trail.

Veterans War Memorial of Texas

Veterans Day is the perfect day to visit the Veterans War Memorial of Texas in McAllen! Every year on Veterans Day at 11:00am, a ceremony takes place at the memorial, and the public is encouraged to attend. After the ceremony, take some time to walk around the grounds to learn about the conflicts that the United States has been involved with. You can also read the names of Hispanic and Texas Medal of Honour recipients, along with the stories of three heroic chaplains.
