2020 Nissan Maxima Safety Features and Rating

The 2020 Nissan Maxima has been rated a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Not only did the Maxima nail each safety test, but it has become one of just two non-luxury models to earn a superior rating in the IIHS pedestrian crash prevention category, the newest test to join the lineup. In this guide, we are going to dive further into the 2020 Nissan Maxima safety features and IIHS rating, so keep reading to learn more.

How Safe is the 2020 Maxima?

The IIHS safety evaluation tests each vehicle in three different categories and rates the vehicle’s performance on a scale of Good to Poor or Superior to Basic depending on the category. The 2020 Maxima received a Good rating in the ease of use for the LATCH system and in all aspects of crashworthiness which included rankings for small overlap front: driver-side, small overlap front: passenger-side, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats. When tested for crash avoidance and mitigation, the Maxima earned a ranking of Average for its headlights and a ranking of Superior for both front crash prevention: vehicle-to-vehicle and front crash prevention: vehicle-to-pedestrian.

The IIHS launched the pedestrian rating earlier this year and has since tested 11 different luxury and non-luxury small SUVs in the category. The Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian system is a standard feature on the 2020 Maxima and this feature helped the Maxima earn its superior ranking for pedestrian crash prevention. This safety system uses radar and camera-based technology to track and detect nearby or oncoming vehicles and approaching pedestrians. The system deploys visual and audible alerts if a pedestrian is detected and the system will engage automatic braking to eliminate or reduce impact severity.

Additional safety features that can be found in the 2020 Nissan Maxima lineup include the Anti-Lock Braking System, Brake Assist/Electric Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Vehicle Dynamic Control and Traction Control System, Zone Body Construction, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert.
