How To Jump Start A Car With A Dead Battery

So you’re life is ruined. If you’re stranded on the side of the road, skip this introduction and go straight to the steps! As cars become more dependable over time, a dead battery becomes increasingly rare. For this reason, it is even more important to know how to properly defibrillate your car to bring it back to life in a pinch. Because who knows where you will be when it happens and who knows who will be able to help you.

After you establish yourself as a pro, you will find that some of these steps can be skipped or done in different orders, but here is a fool-proof way to jump start a car every time without risk.

Step One:

Attach jumper cables to corresponding battery terminals on the WORKING car. We will refer to this as the donor car.

Step Two:

Start the car. To test whether you have a solid connection, briefly touch the red and black cables from the other end of the cables together. If the connection is adequate, a spark will emit from the cables, but only do this if you are unsure of your connection. Doing this for more than 1 second can damage the donor car.

Step Three:

Attach the open cables to the dead battery. Always connect the black (-) cable before the red (+) to ensure the circuit is properly grounded before being connected with power.

Step Four:

Depending on how dead your battery is, this could take a few minutes, but be patient. After waiting about 60 seconds, start the dead car. If it still will not start, simply wait longer.
